Parallels flagship product in the virtualisation space for Enterprises is Parallels Virtuozzo Containers. Virtuozzo Containers is a patented OS virtualisation solution that creates isolated virtual environments (Container) or containers on a single physical server and OS instance.
OS Virtualisation is streamlined for the best performance, management and efficiency. At the base resides a standard host operating system, in the case of Parallels Virtuozzo that includes Windows and Linux. Next is the virtualisation layer with a proprietary file system and a kernel service abstraction layer that ensure isolation and security of resources between different containers. The virtualisation layer makes each container appear as a standalone server. Finally, the container itself houses the application or workload. This architecture has a negligible overhead as the OS is installed on the server. No OS overhead in the container itself. Furthermore, you are running your applications on the server and they are started with a template. This is as well reducing the size of a Container. Missing this overhead, Containers can e.g. use the full power of the underlying hardware and you are able to place more Containers on a standard server than you could do with Virtual Machines. Furthermore, given the small size of the Container architecture, backups are question of seconds, cost for storage and SAN are dramatically lower.
Usage scenarios are Server Consolidation in more homogenous environments, Database Virtualisation, Linux Consolidation and VDI
